Three numbers follow the sock question around the internet: you fall asleep 7.5 minutes faster, you sleep 32 minutes longer, and you wake up 7.5 fewer times. Cleveland Clinic prints them. CNN prints them. Dozens of smaller sites print them. Almost none of them tell you where the numbers came from, which is a shame, because the source is a single open-access paper about six young men sleeping in a climate chamber, and reading it changes what you should expect from a pair of socks.
The short answer is that socks probably do help a bit, under one specific condition, and that the reason nearly everyone gives for why they help is not what the study found.
The short version
- Yes, modestly, and only in a cool room. The one trial behind every article measured 7.5 minutes faster to sleep and 32 minutes more total sleep, in a chamber held at 73°F (23°C).
- The evidence is six healthy young men. Mean age 22.7, one night per condition, measured by a wrist tracker. That is a genuine result and a very small one.
- The popular explanation is backwards. Cleveland Clinic, CNN and the Sleep Foundation all say warm feet lower your core temperature. That study measured core temperature and found no significant change.
- The sleepers themselves noticed nothing. Their morning questionnaires showed no significant difference between the sock and no-sock nights. The tracker saw an effect the people did not.
- Try it if your feet are cold in a cool bedroom. That is the only situation anyone has tested. If your feet get hot, take the socks off, and nothing is lost.
The study everyone cites, in full
The paper is Ko and Lee, “Effects of feet warming using bed socks on sleep quality and thermoregulatory responses in a cool environment,” Journal of Physiological Anthropology, 2018. It is free to read, which makes the silence about its details a little harder to excuse.
Six young men took part, average age 22.7 years. Each of them slept in the lab twice, once wearing bed socks and once without, in random order, so every man acted as his own comparison. The room was held at 73°F (23°C) with 50% relative humidity. Each session ran seven hours. Sleep was measured with wrist actigraphy, a movement-based estimate rather than the electrode-based polysomnography used for clinical sleep studies. Heart rate, rectal temperature and skin temperatures were logged through the night, and in the morning the men filled in a questionnaire about how well they thought they had slept.
The socks went on roughly an hour before bed, which is a detail worth keeping, since it means the feet were already warm when the lights went out rather than warming up during the night.
Here is what the seven hours produced, and it is useful to see the wins and the blanks side by side rather than only the wins.

Every result in the top half reached statistical significance. So did the foot temperature. Everything in the bottom half did not.
The authors are direct about the limits. They write that the findings should be tested with a larger sample, and that future studies need to include older people and women, neither of whom were in the room. They also call for tests in colder conditions. Six men in their twenties, at one temperature, on one night each, is not a population. It is a starting point that nobody has followed up as loudly as they have quoted it.
The mechanism the top results get backwards
This is the part that made the post worth writing.
Cleveland Clinic’s page on sleeping with socks carries the subtitle “Putting on socks at night can help regulate your core body temperature to bring on ZZZs,” and states plainly: “Warming your feet actually helps lower core body temperature.” Its sleep medicine specialist, Dr. Aparna Bhat, is quoted saying that as blood vessels open, “This decreases your body’s core temperature and helps signal that it’s time to sleep.” CNN’s article runs the same line from Michelle Drerup, director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Cleveland Clinic: “increasing the blood circulation to your feet results in a lower core temperature.” The Sleep Foundation puts it in one clause, saying that wearing socks to bed helps the body decrease core body temperature.
Then CNN cites the 2018 study as the evidence for it.
That study measured rectal temperature all night long and found no significant difference between the two conditions. Its own conclusion says the socks improved sleep quality “but had no significant influence on core body temperature.” Three of the four best-ranked pages give a mechanism that the paper they are leaning on tested and did not find.
Be fair about what this does and does not overturn. Distal vasodilation is real. Widening the blood vessels in the hands and feet does dump heat through the skin, that heat loss is genuinely tied to falling asleep, and the broader literature on it is much larger than one trial. What the six-man study supports is narrower: the feet got about 2.3°F (1.3°C) warmer, the gap between skin temperature at the extremities and at the trunk widened, and sleep improved. Heat moved outward. A drop in core temperature was looked for and not seen. So if someone tells you socks work because they lower your core temperature and points at this study, the study is not what is holding that sentence up.

The finding nobody prints
In the morning, the men filled in a sleep-quality questionnaire, and their answers showed no significant difference between the night with socks and the night without.
Sit with that for a second. The wrist tracker recorded half an hour more sleep and a faster drop-off, and the people who did the sleeping could not tell the two nights apart.
There are two honest readings and I do not think anyone can settle between them from this data. One is that small objective gains simply fall below what a person notices, which would be unsurprising. The other is that with six participants, a subjective questionnaire has very little chance of detecting anything, so the blank may only be a blank. Both readings are fair, and the second one applies to the whole study: a null result from six people is weak evidence of no effect, just as a positive result from six people is thin evidence of one.
Who this plausibly helps
The trial tested one situation: cold feet, cool room. That is the boundary of what anyone can honestly promise.
- Cold feet in a cool bedroom. This is the tested case, and the one where socks have something to do.
- A warm bedroom. Your feet are not the problem. Warming them further gives the mechanism nothing to work with, and may just make you hot.
- Feet that get too warm in socks. Take them off. Jennifer Mundt, a sleep specialist and associate professor at the University of Utah, told CNN exactly that: “If you wear socks to bed and you feel like your feet are too hot, by all means, take your socks off.”
The cost of testing this on yourself is one pair of socks and about a week of nights, which is a far better ratio than most sleep advice offers. Just keep the size of the claim in proportion. If your sleep is broken by a schedule that moves two hours on weekends, or a bedroom you can see across at 2 a.m., socks are not the lever. Get the room cool and dark first, then fine-tune. What socks to sleep in
The practical question behind most sock searches is which kind, and here the guidance is comfort-based rather than trial-based. Cleveland Clinic’s advice is loose-fitting and breathable, in natural fibers: cotton, merino wool, bamboo, or viscose. Synthetics like polyester are less suitable. Avoid sleeping in compression socks unless a clinician has told you to wear them, since those are a medical device with a job that is not this one. Wear a fresh pair each night rather than the ones you had on all day, which keeps bacteria down.
No study has compared sock materials for sleep, so treat all of that as sensible comfort advice rather than evidence. If a thick pair leaves you kicking the covers off at 3 a.m., that is your answer regardless of the fiber.
So, with or without?
Sleeping without socks is not a mistake, and there is nothing wrong with bare feet under a duvet. The honest framing is that this is a small comfort adjustment with one supporting trial behind it, not a rule. If your feet are cold at bedtime and your room is on the cool side, socks are cheap, reversible and mildly supported by evidence. If your feet are already comfortable, the research gives you no reason to change anything.
What this post does not know
Whether any of this holds for women, for anyone over about 25, or for people with insomnia or another sleep disorder. None of those groups were in the study, and the authors flag all of them as open questions. Whether socks help in a genuinely cold room, as opposed to a mildly cool one, is also untested.
And if your feet are persistently cold, numb, or changing color, that is not a sock question. Circulation problems, Raynaud’s, thyroid conditions and diabetic foot care all sit with a doctor, not with a sleep blog.
